Description

This is an image of 2 Arp galaxies in the same shot.

IC 983 and with IC 982 make up Arp 117.

IC 983 is a magnitude 11.7 spiral galaxy (type SB(r)bc) in Boötes, it's apparent size is 3.9 by 2.6 arcmin. The Arp Atlas quotes it as an example of an elliptical galaxy (IC 982) close to and perturbing a spiral galaxy.

Arp 79 is not actually an NGC object but is sometimes called NGC 5490C because it is in the general area of NGC 5490.

Arp 79 is a 14th-magnitude spiral galaxy (type SB(s)bc) in Boötes, it is about 255 million light years away.

The galaxy is listed as Arp 79, which suggests it is a spiral galaxy with a large high surface brightness companion, but there is no sign of such a companion on either my image or the Arp Atlas plate, although there is a large somewhat brighter clump just South of the nucleus which may be what Halton Arp was indicating.

This image, which shows rather poorly shaped stars was taken some years back, probably not long after I began using guided imaging and hadn't quite got it right.
